Atsuta Shrine is located in the green gardens of Atsuta Forest, which spreads across the southern part of Nagoya City. Affectionately known as "Atsuta-san" since ancient times, it is crowded with nearly 7 million visitors per year, and attracts boundless reverence and faith from people not only in Nagoya but all over the country as a "spiritual home." It enshrines the Kusanagi sword, one of the Three Sacred Treasures, and has been revered by the Imperial Court and military commanders since ancient times, making it known as the second largest shrine after Ise Grand Shrine. It was originally built in the Owari style, but was rebuilt in 1893 (Meiji 26) in the Shinmei style.
